Beauty Applying Makeup by Toyohara Chikanobu was made in 1906. This woodblock print provides a fascinating glimpse into the refined world of women fashion and grooming customs during the late Meiji period. The scene portrays a noble beauty sitting in front of a ornate mirror stand as she carefully tends to her appearance, reflecting the cultural emphasis on elegance, decorum, and presentation among the upper classes. Beside her, attentive attendants stand ready with cosmetic trays and grooming utensils, highlighting the collaborative and ritualistic nature of courtly preparation. Chikanobu uses intricate patterns on the lavish kimonos and vibrant colors to capture both the material luxury and the serene, intimate atmosphere of traditional Japanese interior life. - @silk.echo.jp
