STRV 122🇸🇪 | Edit | Stridsvagn 122 (Strv 122) is a Swedish third-generation main battle tank based on the German Leopard 2A5. Upon entering service in the late 1990s, it was widely considered the most well-protected and technologically advanced Leopard 2 variant in the world. Sweden modified the baseline Leopard 2A5 to meet its specific national defense requirements—focusing on tactical camouflage in Scandinavian forests, maximized crew survivability, and seamless integration into a digitized battlefield network. Key Differences from the Standard Leopard 2A5 * Enhanced Armor Protection (MEXAS Add-on): * Frontal Hull Projection: Unlike the German Leopard 2A5, which retained the older upper glacis plate from the 2A4 version, the Strv 122 features an added composite armor module across the upper front hull. * Turret Roof: Reinforced add-on armor was installed on top of the turret to protect against top-attack munitions, cluster submunitions, and overhead threats. * Hatch Armor: Driver and commander hatches received extra structural armor protection. * Battle Management System (TNCIS / Taktisk Minne): * Sweden was among the early adopters in Europe to fully integrate its tanks into an army-wide command and control network, allowing real-time targeting and positional data sharing between vehicles. * GALIX Smoke Grenade Launchers: * Replaced the standard German smoke dispensers with the French GALIX system, capable of launching multi-spectral smoke, fragmentation, or infrared decoy rounds. * Thermal & Visual Camouflage: * Utilizes specialized MCS (Barracuda) mobile camouflage coatings, reducing the vehicle’s signature in the visual, thermal, and radar spectrums. Specifications & Firepower * Main Gun: 120 mm smoothbore Rheinmetall L/44. Sweden intentionally retained the L/44 barrel over the longer L/55 (found on the Leopard 2A6), as the shorter barrel offers superior maneuverability in dense pine forests and narrow woodland paths. * Engine: MTU MB 873 Ka-501 V12 diesel engine producing 1,500 hp, paired with a Renk HSWL 354 transmission. This ensures exceptional mobility despite the total weight increasing to ~62.5 tonnes. * Fire Control System (FCS): Features an EMES-15 gunner’s sight integrated with thermal imaging, alongside a commander’s PERI-R17A2 panoramic sight with an independent thermal channel enabling hunter-killer capabilities. Variants and Modernization * Strv 122A: The baseline production model (120 units delivered). * Strv 122B: Upgraded variant featuring enhanced mine-protection belly armor and shock-absorbing crew seats. * Strv 122B Int: Adapted for international deployment, featuring upgraded communication systems and environmental control/air conditioning for warmer climates. * Strv 122B+ / Strv 123A: Deep modernization programs focusing on updated thermal sights, integration of the longer L/55A1 main gun for advanced APFSDS rounds, and modernized digital electronics. #tank #tankedit #military #militaryedit #tanks - @of_40_mtca_an4ovy
