The gate was closed. The warning sign said it was electrified, and nobody was there to receive us. But how did we end up there? We hired a Toyota Hilux and driver through a nonprofit trust that worked with San communities. A reliable four-wheel-drive vehicle was essential because we would be traveling through deep sand in the Kalahari Desert. The price was much higher than what Tasha had previously arranged. The driver also insisted that we fill the auxiliary fuel tanks, costing approximately $400. I was not convinced we would use that much fuel, but I did not know the terrain well enough to argue. In this situation, safety had to come first. The following morning, we purchased gifts for the San people, food, meat, a cooler, ice and camping supplies. Siya’s wife made sure we had pillows and bedding for our tents. We should have left early, but the driver arrived late. Our journey did not begin until approximately 3:00 p.m. The Hilux was packed with five people, food, tents, luggage and filming equipment. Before entering the reserve, we stopped in New Xade and hired a translator from the San community we were planning to visit. The driver suggested a high payment, but she accepted my offer—which was almost seven times lower. I later discovered that she and the driver were a couple. Suddenly, his enthusiasm for bringing her made more sense! We continued driving as darkness surrounded us, finally reaching the Central Kalahari Game Reserve gate at approximately midnight. Nobody was there. After waiting almost an hour, Siya and the driver used a long, dry stick to test the gate. It opened. The gate was not electrified! We drove inside with our valid permit and located the officers’ camp. The officer who came out was not happy because the gate had closed hours earlier. Fortunately, he allowed us to camp nearby for the night. Cold and exhausted, we began setting up our tents. Reaching the gate had been difficult—but the real journey was only beginning. Ahead of us was an estimated 720-kilometer adventure over sand, deep inside the Kalahari Desert. Would you have paid the higher price for safety, or continued negotiating? Tell me in the comments. We are also raising support to help Siya and his wife complete their guest property. If you would like to contribute any amount, contact me and I will connect you directly with them.
