We need to remember that we are raising adults, not children.

I see this all the way down to the preschool level. We have 5 year olds who come in drinking from sippy cups and still in diapers because their parents think they are too young to move out of babyhood Within a few weeks, we have them using the toilet, using a regular cup, zipping their own jackets and being responsible for their own bookbags and personal items. They will rise to the expectation with positive reinforcement and gentle guidance

I’m a grade 7/8 teacher. I am doing The Outsiders and talking about how making assumptions about groups of people is damaging. My students have had so many good debates and we are only 2 chapters into the book. Once you start having faith in them to rise to the level of their are capable of is the gateway to immense learning.

I absolutely agree with this! Students want to learn. They want to be engaged. Fill in the blank isn’t engagement.

The best teacher I ever had was a history teacher who started every class discussing the news of the day, then we related those discussions to the lessons of history.

You are a great educator. Your students are fortunate to have you guiding them and getting them started with critical thinking.

My daughter is in 6th grade and asks some of the most incredible questions about life, politics, religion and so much more. She is very observant and interested in learning. We have really amazing discussions at home.
