Wait so are you talking about the two semester foreign language requirement or a full fluency requirement? Because we need to acknowledge that not all colleges here require students to be fluent in another language let alone require a foreign language for their majors.

It was a requirement when I was in high school. We couldn’t graduate without 3 years of another language. That was in multiple schools. Private and public.

I majored in English and it was a requirement to take a second language to get a bachelors or Masters of Arts. Oklahoma House Bill 1017, passed in 1990.

I did not have to take a foreign language in college for my Bachelors. I DID have to take two years of a foreign language to graduate high school.

Its also a requirement for students in high-school and college. I graduated high-school in 2000 and we had to learn a second language. I took French.

Not like I’m gonna get a PhD, but if you already know another language, can you forego that requirement?

I am curious if this is a school by school thing or by degree? My aunt has two PhDs and wasn’t required to take a second language outside of a gen ed, my friend is in her PhD program right now and has to learn another language so I am curious 🧐

Not all PhD programs require it. It depends on the field. Most math/physics/STEM don’t require it and where you’re studying.
