I didn’t know Tonea Nicole Miller personally, but I know Gwen Cherry Park like I know my own neighborhood. I went to summer camp there as a kid. I spent Fourth of Julys there. I’ve been to community events there my entire life. So when I saw people saying a young Black woman was found hanging from a tree there, it stopped me in my tracks. Now, let me be clear about what we know and what we don’t. Authorities have reportedly called it an apparent suicide, and I’m not interested in making up facts or pretending I know something I don’t. But I am interested in asking questions. Because as a Black woman from Miami, I know the weight of hearing that a Black woman was found hanging from a tree in the South. I know the history attached to that. I know why so many of us immediately felt something in our spirit when we heard it. And if I’m being real, what has me just as bothered is how quiet this has been. A young woman was found dead in one of the most recognizable Black communities in Miami, and somehow this story isn’t everywhere? People aren’t talking about it the way I think they should be. That doesn’t mean we jump to conclusions. It means we pay attention. More than anything, I need us as Black people to stop treating a repost like it’s the finish line. We share the flyer. We leave a broken heart emoji. We say “so sad” and then we move on. Meanwhile, a family is still looking for answers. So if Miami organizers are planning something, if there’s a vigil, a town hall, a community response, a call for transparency, tell me where to be. Because I don’t want to just post about Tonea. I want to know what we’re doing. A young woman lost her life. The least we can do is make sure it doesn’t happen quietly.
