This happened to me in 2020 when I first started doing tenant advocacy and housing justice work for a nonprofit research center. I created a successful court watch program that mobilized 15 volunteers daily to document proceedings and cross-referenced that data to outreach tenants in urgent need of support. Even though I prioritized helping Black tenants first, I was repeatedly confronted with white and non-Black people of color who also needed assistance. That tension forced me to profoundly and deeply reconcile between my liberation politics and the immediate realities of frontline advocacy on the ground.

I think it’s insane that people truly believe dating only black people can make you more pro black. Cause with how horrible of a partner they should never want me with another black woman, man, or non-binary individual. But on the real it is a very complicated situation which requires some nuance where I can understand both sides as a product of interracial marriage. I feel it is extremely difficult for us to form genuine romantic relationships with non-black individuals because we are exoticized, and so many of us exoticize ourselves to appeal to non-black potential partners which can be anti-black. It’s a very fine line which is often crossed unknowingly.

I feel like love can't be controlled. U might have a fire bond with someone who ain't black. U just gonna pass that up cause they ain't black? Now the things that may win over ur heart like mutual music interest, cooking/taste & preference for food, & being culturally aware might narrow down ur options to black or mixed lol but atleast ur still open to the possibility of something outside of tht, even if rare.

The rule of thumb is to reject the abstract. a lot of these so called conversations crumble in the real world and what's left is true. you can tell when people haven't been in the streets based off of how they talk about certian things.

The funny thing is popular pro black figures understood that commitment to helping Black people (all black people) be free meant EVERYBODY would be free bc we are the most disenfranchised people and mfs out here trying to GATEKEEP who gets to help us achieve that and how they get labelled. Labels come after the work and most of us haven’t done a quarter of what is needed to truly embody the very same adjectives they want to to police others from using to describe themselves and their self beliefs.
