I bet you use to have a "summer kitchen" also know as a spring house or sometimes known as a well house. These were little buildings that were built on top of natural springs (hence the × pattern in the stone) before there was indoor plumbing and morden refrigeration. It would stay cooler so people would store thier food. So congratulations, you have a cool bit of history in your back yard.

An old man-made structure: The flat surfaces and regular-looking joints could be remnants of a stone crossing, a small dam, a mill structure, or another water-management feature.

it could have been. an old well house or dairy house. They were usually built over a creek so they could put mik & butter colder over the water. That or old water lines🤷‍♀️

Could be ancient tectonic stress causing geological joints. When wide areas of flat bedrock are exposed in a creek bed, the resulting geometric grid is called a tessellated pavement.
