This is seen as mutilation and illegal in countries like the UK, Austria, Sweden, and the Netherlands. The surgery comes with several risks, including unnecessary general anesthetic, rectal prolapse, sphincter disruption, and infection. All of these risks can be life-threatening for a young ferret, which is when most of these surgeries take place. De-scenting is a severely misunderstood surgery. De-scenting DOES NOT remove the musky odor from ferrets. It only removes the scent they release when scared or startled, which rarely happens in a well cared for ferret. Their musky odor comes from the oil their skin produces, which is hormonal.
