JanaNero :
i know it might sound like "power of friendship" slop but i like to think that ichigo's bankai is just a reflection of himself, of what he thought he needed for others. in SS, his bankai mainly made him faster: a representation of his fear. of what he thought would happen – if he wasnt fast enough, Rukia would die. when he became a vasto lorde, his only thought was to protect orihihime, an instinctual thought that manifested by white taking over. 'the blade is me' further reinforces this theory of mine. ichigo has always been the blade, has always been the one to need others. thats why white and OMZ stayed for so long by his side; he knew he wasnt ready to face it all alone. when his zanpakuto was reforged, he took on the ideal of only needing himself, only sacrificing himself for others. when Zangetsu's shell shattered once more, it revealed ichigo at his barest – a teenager who finally accepted that he was not to blame for the deaths of those around him. that if he were to do it all alone, he would never succeed. that is why it was a blade uncovered by the cloth it had earlier: ichigo had no more wounds to hide, no reason to fight by himself anymore. that is the true zangetsu, wielded by the one and true ichigo. the ichigo who couldn't have done this without the support of others, the support his own mother used to give him.
