No, that’s not how it works. It’s up to the team and the medical staff to bench him if there is a serious risk like this. If players got to choose, they would all play through their concussions/injuries because they all want to play and they all want to win. It’s kind of irrelevant what Jalen wanted in that moment - the right thing to do was have him sit out and they didn’t do that. It’s extremely corrupt and I’m sure it happens way more than we know.

My main question here is, why was he given the choice to play after the blood clot(s) were detected? Jalen should’ve been benched, period. The league won’t let athletes play if they are on blood thinners. But they’ll let an athlete play who has a detected blood clot?!? It makes absolutely no sense at all.

considering the reputation of the nfl wrt to cte, this is a weird take to put the onus on the player. your doing a lot by assuming the medical staff was fully transparent with the player.

Mom of professional player🙋♀️. My son has had several very minor to serious injuries in his 6 years playing. The teams always took into consideration his health first and foremost. Even a groin sprain was taken as serious as a major injury. No matter how much he wanted/begged to play. Can’t imagine a team putting a player in any sort of health compromise, with or without his desire to play. Especially a franchise player. Ultimately it is their team and decision.

No one who stays up for 36 hours should be making a decision whether they play or not. That is absolutely ridiculous to me. Even thinking of this as an employer, if I heard blood clot I am not letting someone do physical activity.

I thought the team/ nfl made the final decision when it comes to injuries because of the liability. I think he likely did decide to play, however ultimately the Eagles probably should have told him no.

Hopefully this brings up why are we pushing NFL games being played in other countries and having players deal with long flights after injuries in the first place 🤷♀️Love your take and love Jalen, he’s a big investment for the Birds and there’s a lot more we don’t know. 🦅

Ok this is actually my area of personal expertise bc I’ve had a deep vein thrombosis in my right arm since I was 16 (non life threatening). My guess is it just wasn’t life threatening when he got to London and while a MAJOR nuisance and no don’t sleep, I could almost guarantee it was his call to make.

With guidelines surrounding sports medicine and liability it is more likely that his clearance to play was not his own. He should get paid out.

I’m a 2 time survivor of bilateral PE’s and was never told to stay awake, so strange to me. Spent a week each time in a hospital bed! Always many sides to a story though.

Just watched a video from a doctor who has followed NFL injuries since 2017 who said Philadelphia is the most aggressive team in the NFL when it comes to alllowing injured players in the game.

Absolutely Not. :
I have been wanting to say this in EVERY VIDEO I’ve seen but didn’t want to get in an internet fight. Especially considering this would be his 7th season and if this injury is as severe as these statements say, that VERY WELL could be his last game (should he need to be on those meds for the rest of his life). Also, Go Birds 🦅🦅🦅

My question is: why did they wait until they got to London to do an ultrasound? Why wasn't that done as a precaution after he was cleated in the game before? That seems bananas.

It’s interesting to me as a physical therapist because we are not allowed to walk a patient if they have a superficial blood clot due to the risk of throwing a clot or it becoming a DVT. I am shocked they allowed him to play and suggested movement. A SVT can EASILY become a DVT and PE. As a PT this is horrifying.

what's crazy to me is he was all over Hulu commercials just 2-3 summers ago. Now clot issues can be career ending. I've been on bt since 2004 and it changes ur entire life

Is it possible that he insisted on playing because once he got the diagnosis, and realized his future treatment include blood thinners, he realized this was going to be his last game for the forereable future?

I do think it's possible he was involved in/driving the decision. but as Marshawn taught us, they also do a lot of things "willingly" so they don't get fined

The story I saw which maybe was updates after you covered it, was that the diagnosis was that because they were not regular blood clots, he was medically cleared to play with them based on the diagnosis he was given, but maybe that was an assumption that he was cleared medically or maybe it was a medical professional who can be bought (literally or metaphorically).
