@browneyedgurl801: On November 3, 2014, 58-year-old Gary Anderson arrived at a construction site in Jersey City, New Jersey, to deliver drywall. He had parked his truck near a high-rise building under construction and stopped to speak with another worker. Approximately 50 stories above them, a one-pound tape measure accidentally slipped from a construction worker’s belt and began falling toward the ground. The tape measure plunged hundreds of feet before striking a piece of metal construction equipment approximately 10 to 15 feet above the ground. Instead of falling straight down, it ricocheted sideways and struck Anderson directly in the head. The impact knocked him unconscious. Anderson had a hard hat inside his truck but was not wearing it at the time of the accident. Emergency crews rushed Anderson to Jersey City Medical Center, but he died shortly before 10 a.m., less than an hour after being struck. Federal workplace safety investigators responded to the construction site to examine the incident. The extraordinary accident showed how even an ordinary one-pound tool could become deadly after falling from a skyscraper.
