His name was Jonathan Crenshaw. For years, Crenshaw had been a familiar sight along Lincoln Road in Miami Beach, Florida. Born with a severe limb difference, he had learned to use his feet to create colorful drawings and paintings, which he sold to tourists. But in July 2018, his life became the subject of international headlines. Police arrested the then-46-year-old artist after a confrontation with 22-year-old Chicago tourist Cesar Coronado. According to police, Coronado suffered wounds to his left arm after Crenshaw used his feet to wield a pair of scissors. But what actually started the confrontation was disputed. Coronado and a woman accompanying him told investigators they had approached Crenshaw to ask for directions when he suddenly attacked. Crenshaw told police a different story. He said he had been lying down when Coronado approached and punched him in the head. According to Crenshaw, he grabbed the scissors with his feet and acted in self-defense. Police charged him with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. The story spread around the world, with headlines focusing on the extraordinary circumstances of the alleged attack. But the case eventually reached a jury. In November 2021, Crenshaw was found not guilty. His acquittal meant he was not convicted of the alleged stabbing, although the conflicting accounts of what happened remained part of the story. Sadly, Crenshaw died on May 12, 2023, at the age of 51. His death was publicly reported by Miami New Times in March 2024. For years, he had been known as a street artist who created paintings with his feet. Then he became the subject of a sensational criminal headline.
