His wrestling background became one of his greatest strengths when he transitioned to mixed martial arts. Beginning His MMA Career Daniel Cormier began his professional MMA career in 2009. He won his first professional fight against Gary Frazier by technical knockout. Before joining the UFC, he competed in Strikeforce and won the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix in 2012. He won by unanimous decision and continued defeating strong opponents. Rivalry with Jon Jones One of the most famous rivalries in UFC history was between Daniel Cormier and Jon Jones. Their first fight took place at UFC 182 on January 3, 2015. Jones won by unanimous decision, giving Cormier his first professional MMA loss. They fought again at UFC 214 in July 2017. Jones initially won by TKO, but the result was later changed to a no contest following an anti-doping violation. Their rivalry became one of the biggest stories in the UFC because both fighters were highly competitive and determined to prove themselves. Winning the Light Heavyweight Championship On May 23, 2015, Cormier faced Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 for the vacant Light Heavyweight Championship. Cormier used his wrestling and grappling skills to control the fight. He eventually submitted Johnson with a rear-naked choke in the third round.
