@khanzada.sfc: A Toronto Muslim surgeon is leading work to repair donor lungs before they ever reach a patient. Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, Director of the Toronto Lung Transplant Program at UHN, says human trials begin next year on a gene and stem cell therapy meant to make a transplanted lung “look more like itself.” The therapy builds on Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion, a system developed at Toronto General Hospital that keeps donor lungs breathing outside the body for up to 12 hours. That gives doctors time to assess and repair them, which matters because about 80 percent of donor lungs worldwide are deemed unusable for transplant. His long-term goal is an organ that needs no anti-rejection medication, and eventually repairing damaged lungs inside the body. Keshavjee was also present for the world’s first successful lung transplant at Toronto General in 1983, and he was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2013.
