Yeah it was obviously both to tourniquet but also to create a stronger grip since the shield was broken and unwieldy.

he tightened the shield around his forearm so he doesn't drop it while fighting. it's a technique used when you're fighting outnumbered, you tighten the shield so you don't drop it and your grip doesn't weaken
