I’ll be explaining why people get memories! In short, since you identify as that character your brain genuinely believes you are that character. But one problem, your brain thinks “if I am that thing, why don’t I have memories of being that thing?” So your brain creates fake memories, or pseudo-memories of your “past life” as that character, so the gap makes your brain more comfortable and safer. Obviously this doesn’t affect every alterhuman.

Most of the time, it follows the belief of Alternate Universes. you died in one universe and ended up in another afterwards, and you have left over memories from said universe. That or its caused by delusion, which is a touchy subject at times.
