What does lactoferrin actually do for iron? If you’re taking iron but your levels aren’t improving, we need to understand why. The dose and formulation matter, but so do ongoing blood loss, absorption, consistency and the way your body regulates iron. One important regulator is hepcidin, a hormone that controls how much iron enters your bloodstream from your gut and how much is released from storage. When iron stores are low, hepcidin usually decreases, allowing more iron to become available. But inflammation can increase hepcidin. This can reduce intestinal iron absorption and keep more iron locked away in storage, making it less available for red blood cell production. This is where lactoferrin becomes interesting. Lactoferrin is an iron-binding protein found naturally in breast milk, saliva and tears. The lactoferrin used in supplements commonly comes from cow’s milk. Researchers have studied its effects on inflammatory signalling and iron regulation. Some clinical studies have reported improvements in iron markers, but results vary. It isn’t a guaranteed solution when an iron supplement hasn’t worked. In this video, I explain the formulation behind Land Lab Iron with Lactoferrin & Kakadu Plum, which combines: • Iron bisglycinate • Bovine lactoferrin • Kakadu plum and vitamin C The clinical question is whether the formulation and dose suit your needs, and whether we’ve addressed what is causing your iron deficiency. Heavy periods, gastrointestinal blood loss and conditions affecting absorption may require investigation. Changing supplements alone won’t necessarily resolve them. Appropriate blood testing and follow-up help us assess your response and decide whether your treatment needs adjusting. You can find Land Lab Iron with Lactoferrin & Kakadu Plum at Nourishing Apothecary. For individualised support, book a consultation or start with our free Find the Right Practitioner discovery call. Liverpool, Sydney and Australia wide via Zoom. www.nourishingapothecary.com #Lactoferrin #IronDeficiency #LowFerritin #IronSupplements #NourishingApothecary
