The voice that made time stand still fell silent three years ago. Patricia Janečková died on 1 October 2023, in a hospital in Ostrava, at 25. She had married that July, months earlier. On 10 February 2022, she was the one who wrote on her social media that she had breast cancer. This video comes from before all of it. 10 November 2015, the Dvořák Hall of the Rudolfinum in Prague, a War Veterans' Day concert. She is 17. Behind her, a military band in uniform; on her dress, the veterans' red poppy. And there is not one word in what she sings. Morricone wrote this theme in 1968 with no lyrics at all: vowels only, a vocalise. The original was recorded by soprano Edda Dell'Orso, who had three octaves. With no text, there is no character to hide behind. What you hear is her — 17 years old, an entire line with not one syllable to lean on. Eight years after this concert she was gone. The recording stayed, and it still does what it did then: it stops time. Which moment of this vocalise did you go back to hear again? 🎼 Work: Theme from Once Upon a Time in the West (1968) 🎹 Composer: Ennio Morricone 🇮🇹 🎤 Performer: Patricia Janečková 🇸🇰 🎬 Recording: Dvořák Hall, Rudolfinum, Prague — 10/11/2015, War Veterans' Day concert Send this to someone who loves a great voice. #BestOfOpera #PatriciaJaneckova #Morricone #Vocalise
