@jerseytalks_: Before Water Tower Park... there was a four-acre reservoir. 💧 The Weehawken Water Tower is 175 feet of Gothic Revival brick, designed by Frederick Clarke Withers and built by the Hackensack Water Company as part of a public water system that included a four-acre reservoir filled with water pumped from the Hackensack River. It opened on September 29, 1883, and science journals of the day called it a major engineering achievement. Inside sat a 165,000-gallon, 650-ton iron tank that gravity-fed fresh water to Weehawken and nearby towns until 1904. Then it almost disappeared. A community effort saved it from demolition in 1979, the same year it joined the New Jersey Register of Historic Places (the National Register followed in 1980). The township took ownership in 2000, restored the exterior over four years, and dedicated Water Tower Park in 2006. Have you seen it up close? Tell us your Water Tower memory 👇 Before There Was... is our Jersey Talks series bringing back the places New Jersey remembers. What Weehawken landmark should we feature next?
