@ayuh_maine: 20 acres of rock, 10 miles off our coast, and the US and Canada still can't agree who owns it. Machias Seal Island has been disputed since the Treaty of Paris and nobody's ever settled it. Canada's run the lighthouse since 1832. We've basically never shown up except for a WWI blink. Then there's the Gray Zone, 277 square miles where lobstermen from both sides fish under two different rulebooks, and tensions have gotten bad enough to spark actual death threats on the water. This is real Maine, not the postcard version tourists drive up for in July. Mainers have known about this disputed water for generations while summer visitors are still trying to figure out how to pronounce Machias. Maine culture isn't just lighthouses and lobster rolls, it's border disputes nobody in DC remembers exist. Bangor, Portland, Lewiston, doesn't matter where you're from in this state, locals know the coast has its own rules. Slow life, wild coastline, and a 200 year old property dispute. That's Maine for you.
