Ted Philipakos had a vision. After a false dawn two years earlier, the New York born creative director was finally tasked with re-branding Venezia, a relatively unknown club based in one of the worlds most culturally rich cities. The strategy; combine beauty and business. After decades of financial instability, the club had secured new investment, placing Ted at the creative helm, with a philosophy of growing awareness through turning the club into “the most fashionable in the world”. To achieve that goal, the creative teams at Fly Nowhere and later Bureau Borsche used Venetian detailing, iconography and artistic references as design inspiration, with the first home shirt featuring embellished goal elements, inspired by the city’s gilded churches, monuments and palazzi and the overall historical significance of gold in Venetian art and commerce going back to the Late Medieval and Early Renaissance periods. Most notably, the shirt featured the goal stars of the iconic Basilica de San Marco arranged in a V shape. But this was not just about the kit; the campaign featured models shot in sun-soaked locations across the city, the kind normally reserved for Versace or Gucci. The results was a viral wave that firmly redefined the relationship between football and fashion, with 95% of online sales coming from outside of Italy. Despite the skeptics, each season of the three year period was met with critical acclaim. Football shirts were now stylised campaigns, a far cry from the classic awkward pitchside snap or stuffy training ground closet. Venezia would, inevitably, spawn a thousand imitations. But to call them imitations would be unfair. To put it simply, Venezia raised the standards for attention to detail and crafted storytelling. And football shirts would never be the same again. #venice #venezia #footballshirt #story #fashion
