@pagesinthenight: There’s something so funny about going through the most intense personal transformation of your entire life and having absolutely no idea how to explain it when somebody casually asks what you’ve been doing lately. 😭 Because what are you supposed to say? “Oh, nothing much, just confronting childhood wounds, questioning everything I thought I knew about myself, learning how to regulate my emotions, and trying to stop repeating patterns that have been ruining my relationships for years.” Like imagine saying all that to somebody who was literally just trying to make small talk at the grocery store. So instead you smile and say, “Yeah, just been working a lot,” even though the real work has been happening inside your own head. And honestly, sometimes that work is more exhausting than anything else you’ve ever done. Because nobody really prepares you for how uncomfortable genuine personal growth can be. You start noticing reactions you’ve had your entire life and questioning where they came from. You realize that some of the things you thought were just part of your personality were actually habits you developed to protect yourself. Maybe you shut down whenever somebody gets too close. Maybe you assume people are upset with you when their energy changes. Maybe you constantly need reassurance, struggle to set boundaries, or feel responsible for everybody else’s emotions. And suddenly you’re recognizing patterns you never even knew existed. The hardest part is that awareness doesn’t automatically make those patterns disappear. You can understand exactly why you react a certain way and still have to practice responding differently when those feelings show up. You can know that something isn’t good for you and still feel drawn toward it because it’s familiar. You can forgive somebody and still need time to feel safe again. And sometimes you have to grieve the version of yourself that spent years surviving in ways that no longer serve the person you’re becoming. That’s a strange experience because from the outside, it might look like nothing is happening. You’re going to work, making dinner, answering messages, and living your normal life. But internally, you’re rebuilding the way you understand yourself and the world around you. And not everybody needs access to that process. Sometimes healing requires privacy. Sometimes you’re not ready to explain what you’re learning because you’re still trying to understand it yourself. And sometimes you simply don’t have the emotional energy to turn your entire personal journey into a conversation over coffee. 😭 But there’s something beautiful about reaching a point where you genuinely want to become healthier, not just appear happier. Where you’re willing to take accountability for your own patterns instead of blaming every difficult experience on somebody else. Where you’re learning that peace doesn’t always come from changing your circumstances, but sometimes from changing how you respond to them. And eventually, people might notice that you’re calmer, more intentional, less reactive, or more comfortable being yourself. They won’t necessarily know everything it took to get there. Because sometimes the biggest changes in your life happen so quietly that when somebody asks what you’ve been doing, all you can really say is, “I’ve been working on myself.”
