@nightflightseverywhere: There’s something about getting older that completely changes what you find attractive in a person. Because when you’re younger, it’s easy to get caught up in appearances, popularity, expensive things, and how impressive somebody looks standing next to you. But eventually you start realizing that none of those things tell you whether somebody is actually a good person. You can be sitting across from the most physically attractive person you’ve ever met, having an amazing conversation, feeling like you’ve finally found somebody special, and then watch them speak disrespectfully to a waiter because their food took an extra ten minutes. And suddenly they’re not nearly as attractive anymore. 😭 Because little moments like that reveal things you can’t always see during the honeymoon stage. It’s easy to be charming when you’re trying to impress somebody. It’s easy to be generous when there’s an audience. It’s easy to talk about kindness, loyalty, and respect when everything is going your way. But how do you treat people when there’s absolutely nothing to gain? Do you acknowledge the person cleaning the tables? Do you say thank you to the cashier? Do you treat somebody with the same basic dignity whether they’re incredibly successful or struggling to make ends meet? And honestly, one of the biggest things to pay attention to is how somebody behaves when they’re frustrated. Because everybody can be pleasant on a perfect day. Character becomes much more visible when plans fall apart, somebody makes a mistake, or life doesn’t go exactly how they wanted. And family relationships can reveal a lot too, although it’s important to remember that not everybody comes from a healthy family, and having boundaries with relatives doesn’t make somebody unkind. What matters is whether they approach people with honesty, compassion, and respect. The same goes for friendships. Are they genuinely happy when their friends succeed, or does every accomplishment turn into a competition? Can they apologize when they’re wrong? Do they keep promises even when nobody is checking? Do they speak respectfully about people who aren’t in the room? Because the way somebody treats others is often a preview of how they might eventually treat you once the excitement of a new relationship settles down. And that’s why having high standards doesn’t necessarily mean expecting somebody to be wealthy, flawless, or ridiculously good-looking. Sometimes it means wanting somebody whose values actually match the beautiful things they say. Somebody who can disagree without being cruel. Somebody who has integrity when being dishonest would be easier. Somebody who doesn’t need to feel superior to other people to feel good about themselves. Of course, attraction and financial stability can matter in a relationship, and there’s nothing wrong with wanting those things. But they can’t replace emotional maturity, kindness, or trustworthiness. Because looks change, circumstances change, and money can come and go. But the way somebody treats people when they have nothing to gain tells you more about their character than anything they could ever buy to impress you.
