In January 1997, Comair Flight 3272 (an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia operating as Delta Connection) was on final approach to Detroit, Michigan, descending through a freezing winter snowstorm. As the twin-engine turboprop flew through the dark clouds, a thin, highly abrasive layer of ice began rapidly accumulating on the leading edges of the wings. Believing they were flying at a safe approach speed, the pilots didn't realize how severely this "rough ice" was destroying the aircraft's aerodynamic lift. When the crew commanded a routine flap extension to slow down for landing, the ice-laden wings instantly gave out. Without any warning, the aircraft violently snapped into an uncontrollable roll, flipping completely upside down. The plane plummeted from the sky and slammed nose-first into a snowy field in rural Michigan, instantly killing all 29 people on board. The NTSB investigation revealed a fatal, systemic flaw in the FAA's icing regulations. The pilots had actually maintained the required minimum airspeed dictated by their manuals, but the investigation proved those minimums were dangerously slow for flying in severe icing conditions. Furthermore, vastly outdated training had taught pilots to wait for a quarter-inch of ice to build up before activating their inflatable de-icing boots. This tragedy completely revolutionized winter flying, forcing the FAA to mandate much higher minimum airspeeds in freezing moisture and requiring pilots to activate de-icing boots the very second they see ice begin to form. #Comair3272 #AirCrashInvestigation #AviationHistory #FlightSafety #Embraer120
