A man previously convicted of murder was reportedly being paid to work as a “Peace Ambassador” through a Los Angeles city-funded violence prevention program. Michael Angel Alvarez, also known as “Diablo,” received $58,156 in 2025 from an organization contracted to help reduce violence in Los Angeles. But on May 29, 2026, federal authorities arrested him for allegedly possessing body armor illegally as a convicted violent felon. Investigators also alleged he maintained ties to the 18th Street gang. The organization received funding under a city program operating during Mayor Karen Bass's administration. There is no established evidence that Bass personally hired Alvarez or knew about the alleged gang activity. A program designed to prevent violence employed someone with a murder conviction. That raises some serious questions about background checks, oversight, and how taxpayer dollars are being spent.
