as a native floridian, to everyone in the comments mentioning how they’ve never seen an alligator during their time in florida. just know this: you may have not seen them, but they’ve definitely seen you.

don't feed them, don't touch them, don't get too close to them, and if you shine a flashlight down at the pond and see glowing yellowish eyes there's definitely one looking at you.

alligators are not actually very violent animals. not saying you should provoke them or try to interact with them, because that is why most attacks happen, but they will not likely run at you and viciously attack you. gators are ambush predators, not chasers. they also view things by how tall they are, so as long as you are standing up, or if swimming orient yourself straight up and down, they view you as too large to be food. gators have sensory organs on the outside of their mouths that detect movement. forceful disruptions in water draw them towards you, so if in water with one, move slowly and calmly away from them. their bite force is very strong, but their opening force is weak, so it is very easy to hold their mouths closed if need be. to open their mouths (if they are biting you) hit the top of their snout, which usually causes them to open their mouths. happy floridaing!

The running zigzag is such an old wise tale. Their eyes r on the SIDES of their head! Running zigzag just puts you more in their like of vision. You’re better off running straight as fast as u can
