A massive hippo surged up from beneath the surface, its huge head and shoulders bursting through the muddy Sangha with terrifying force. Water sprayed high into the air as the animal lunged toward the small red inflatable boat. Ash Dykes’ eyes went wide. His mouth opened in pure shock. Both hands tightened on the paddle as the kayak rocked hard from the splash. There was no time to think only react. One hard stroke. Then another. The hippo’s bulk filled his vision for a heart-stopping moment before the current and Ash’s desperate paddling carried the boat just out of reach. The animal thrashed once more, sending another wave crashing against the side of the kayak, then sank back beneath the brown water. Ash sat frozen for several seconds, chest heaving, staring at the spot where the hippo had vanished. The jungle on both banks stayed quiet. The river kept flowing.
