3 minutes. That was our ceiling. For 72 days I never got past it. Latch. Suck. The sound of swallowing that made me believe this time would be different. Then minute 3. The jaw clamps. The back arches. She rips off screaming. Milk sprays. She screams harder. I cry. We start again. Same ceiling. Same collapse. 4 lactation consultants in 72 days. Each one watched me feed and adjusted ME. My angle. My hold. My positioning. Cross-cradle. Football. Laid-back. Side-lying. Nipple shield. Without the shield. Compress the breast. Do not compress. Let-down is too fast. Supply is too low. Every single one looked at me. My body. My technique. My failure. Not one of them looked at her. I started dreading feeds. The one thing that was supposed to bond us became the thing that broke me 8 times a day. I would hold her and feel my chest tighten before she even latched because I already knew how it would end. Minute 3. Scream. Failure. I stopped feeding in front of anyone. Because watching someone watch me fail at the one thing my body was supposed to do naturally was worse than failing alone. A friend insisted I see a pediatric osteopath. I did not want to go. I was done being watched. Done being adjusted. Done being told the problem was my body. The osteopath did not look at me. She said "feed her. I want to watch the baby." Tala latched. Minute 1. Good. Minute 2. Still feeding. The osteopath was watching Tala's jaw. Not my breast. Not my hold. The jaw. Minute 3. The jaw clamped. The latch collapsed. Tala pulled off screaming. "There. Did you see that?" She pointed at the jaw joint. "Both sides locked at the same second. The muscles held for exactly as long as they could against a restriction and then failed. That is not a latch problem. That is a jaw problem." She put one finger on each side of Tala's jaw. "Both sides restricted. The jaw has enough range to initiate a latch. But sustaining it requires the muscles to hold an open position under load. At this level of restriction the muscles fatigue in approximately 3 minutes. Every time. On every breast. With every hold. The jaw is the constant. Everything else you changed was irrelevant." She said "4 consultants adjusted the delivery system. Nobody checked the receiving system. You could perfect your technique for a year and the 3-minute wall would stay because the wall is not in your breast. It is in her jaw." She moved to the skull base. "And the jaw is locked because of this. The skull base is compressed from birth. The jaw connects to it through fascial tissue. When the skull base locks it pulls the jaw tight. Release the skull base and the jaw opens because nothing is pulling it closed." She mapped the rest. "Neck restricted. Lower spine rigid. That tight belly is the spine muscles bracing. Sacrum compressed. Crib refusal. 5 areas. One chain. The jaw is where you see the feed fail. The skull base is where it starts." She said something that undid 72 days of shame in one sentence. "This was never about you. Your supply is fine. Your letdown is fine. Your technique was fine. 4 consultants adjusted a body that did not need adjusting while the body that did was in your arms the entire time." I found Dr. Alan Whitmore that night. His guide maps the same 5 areas. Skull base first. Then jaw. I tried the skull base technique before the bedtime feed. The one I dreaded most. Tala latched. Minute 3 passed. No clamp. My hands started trembling. Minute 5. Still feeding. Minute 7. Tears on my face. Minute 9. Minute 11. She came off on her own. Full. Calm. Milk drunk. Jaw relaxed. Eyes heavy. 72 days of 3-minute feeds. 4 consultants who adjusted me. One osteopath who checked her. And a jaw that was holding the wall the entire time while everyone looked at the wrong body. The guide is in the link in my bio. One evening. Five areas. And a feed that finally goes past the minute where yours always breaks. Link in bio. Every baby is different and results may vary. This is not medical advice. Always consult your pediatrician.
