I get what she meant. That was a huge change. From watching him as a kid to that point. Skin color changes and surgeries. I can understand why she said that. In their eyes he was physically turning his back on the black community. Of course now we know why but back then it wasn’t known or understood like it is now

I have been a fan since 1977. He didn’t speak publicly about his lupus and vitiligo at first. So it seemed like he was bleaching his skin which was a huge thing back then so people didn’t know why he was getting lighter.
