El Salvador was once overwhelmed by gangs, and people struggled to live in peace and feel safe. Today, under President Nayib Bukele, the country has seen a dramatic reduction in gang violence, although challenges and human rights concerns remain. Haiti, you can do it too! 🇭🇹 You need leadership that truly loves the nation and puts its people first—not greedy, corrupt politicians who exploit the country for their own benefit. Haiti deserves peace, security, justice, and a future where its people can live without fear. Our nation deserves leaders who serve the people, protect the land, and put Haiti above their own interests. Haiti can rise again! 🇭🇹❤️🔥 El Salvador’s history with gangs is a powerful example of how organized crime can affect an entire country. 🇸🇻 To understand what happened, you have to look beyond the violence and see how gangs gained control over people's everyday lives, businesses, and even parts of the government. How gangs took control of El Salvador 1. Gangs controlled entire neighborhoods 2. They extorted ordinary people Shop owners, bus drivers, street vendors, and other workers were forced to pay regular payments known as renta. Refusing could mean threats, beatings, or death. Many families lived in fear, and some businesses closed or people fled their homes. 3. Violence and weak institutions allowed gangs to grow Poverty, social exclusion, limited opportunities for young people, and ineffective security policies helped gangs expand. Earlier governments tried mass arrests, while a 2012 gang truce later collapsed. Gang violence surged again, and El Salvador recorded a homicide rate of about 105 per 100,000 people in 2015. 4. President Bukele launched a massive crackdown In March 2022, after a deadly wave of killings, President Nayib Bukele introduced an emergency security policy. Police and soldiers arrested tens of thousands of suspected gang members, and the government expanded imprisonment. Official homicide figures subsequently fell dramatically. But was the government itself corrupt? This is an important distinction: gang control and government corruption are related, but they are not the same thing. Gang corruption: Criminal groups used threats, extortion, and violence to control communities and extract money. Political corruption and alleged negotiations: Reports by El Faro cited by Human Rights Watch alleged that Bukele's administration negotiated with gangs for reduced killings and electoral support. The government’s alleged arrangements became a major controversy. Human rights concerns today: The crackdown has greatly reduced gang violence according to official figures, but Human Rights Watch and other organizations have documented arbitrary arrests, mistreatment in custody, and people detained without evidence of gang involvement. What can Haiti learn from El Salvador? Haiti faces a different situation, so copying El Salvador's approach exactly may not work. But several lessons are worth considering: Break the gangs' financial power by targeting extortion, weapons trafficking, and the money that sustains armed groups. Build trustworthy security forces that protect ordinary people rather than exploit them. Investigate political and financial connections that allow gangs to operate with impunity. Restore security and justice so people can work, go to school, run businesses, and travel without fear. Hold leaders accountable and ensure public money serves the people. The biggest lesson is that people need more than promises. They need safety, functioning institutions, accountability, and a government that protects their rights. For Haiti, the goal should not simply be to find one powerful president. It should be to build leadership and institutions strong enough to fight gangs and corruption without allowing another form of abuse to replace them. 🇭🇹
