Turning away from a possible military career, he embraced a life of prayer, fasting, and evangelization. In 1720, he founded the Congregation of the Passion of Jesus Christ—known as the Passionists—whose members combined deep contemplation with active preaching to rekindle faith in a weary world. Paul’s preaching drew vast crowds, and he became known for reconciling enemies, healing the sick, and reading hearts with insight that seemed almost supernatural.
