@ladooapp: A Punjabi from a village of about 100 people cracked the genetic code and saved millions of lives. Har Gobind Khorana was born in Raipur, Punjab, in 1922, the son of a patwari, in what he called practically the only literate family in the village. After Punjab University in Lahore, a 1945 fellowship took him to Liverpool, then to Vancouver and Wisconsin, where he built RNA chains that read out how DNA spells proteins. Two years later, a chemically built human insulin gene became the first medicine made from a man-made gene. About 70 million people need insulin today. His real birth date was never recorded. January 9th, 1922 is the date on his documents. He died in Massachusetts in 2011, aged 89. Ladoo helps you learn Punjabi and Gurmukhi!
