JTM :

Why is Isaiah 53 not a messianic prophecy?

Moruti Nelz wa Gospel🇿🇦🎤🎤 :

It depends on who you ask. The text never names anyone, Christian view: yes. Isaiah 53 is read as a prophecy of Jesus. The New Testament applies it to him in several places (Matthew 8:17, Acts 8:32-35, 1 Peter 2:22-25), and Jesus is portrayed as the innocent one who suffered for others' sins. Jewish view: no, it's about Israel. Isaiah repeatedly calls Israel God's servant (41:8, 49:3), so the suffering servant is usually read as the people of Israel, suffering in exile and eventually vindicated.
