@grande_americano: Do you know what these are? As a Texan living in England who’s getting to see more of the world, I recently was privileged to get to visit Rouen in France. And we noticed these river barges/boats with cars on the back of them. Do you know what they are? #atexaninengland #lifeintheuk #rouen #exploringeurope
come to my profile and i try to explain you with my little english.

Think of them as an RV towing a car behind crossed with a semi truck. These vessels are working vessels carrying goods on the canal systems of Europe. They have full living accommodation on board and surprisingly spacious. The cars on board can be driven or lifted onto the canal side to go shopping, site seeing, etc... These vessels aren't just restricted to canals but traverse much larger waterways both inland and seas.

If you visit The Rhine, The Mosel, you see them all the time! They carry everything and are vital in the economies of the nations that border those rivers! During the droughts that meant these barges could not travel with full loads or even not travel at all! Some of the barges are sea going!

they are for the captain and crew to use, so they can stop off and drive to get groceries and run errands

The barges are either converted to accommodation or still carrying cargo. They were traditionally family owner/operator and normally have a crane to lift the cars. I've helped deliver a couple across the Channel and North Sea and even took two up the Nene to Peterborough, for converting to restaurant/bars. They're a serious money pit though, imagine filling up with a thousand litres of diesel now 🫣😱

Did a river cruise last year and all of the freight barges had them on board. Must be for local travel when in different places while transporting cargo.

I know people in London who live on barges. Living on a canal boat isn’t uncommon in the UK. Sometimes they are static. One has to pay for a mooring.
