@obinn88: Japan now makes Filipinos, Indonesians and Nepalese pay for a chest X-ray to prove they are not sick before it will issue a visa. Americans and Europeans walk in untested. This isn't a rumor. It's an official rule from Japan's Ministry of Health, and it just expanded. Filipinos and Nepalese have been under it since June 2025. Vietnamese since September 2025. Indonesia is next: screening opens November 2, and from January 4, 2027, Japan won't accept an Indonesian visa application without a TB Clearance Certificate. Myanmar and China are already on the list. Their dates haven't been announced. Here's how it works. You walk into a clinic Japan has approved in your own country, get a chest X-ray, and pay for it yourself. If you're clear, you get a certificate. It expires in 180 days. If you have active tuberculosis, Japan's immigration law classifies that as a Class II infectious disease — and you're refused entry outright. It applies to anyone staying more than 90 days — workers, students, spouses. Japan's reasoning is in its own numbers. In 2024, 1,980 of Japan's 10,051 new TB cases were people born overseas. The Philippines topped the list with 317 patients, Vietnam 272, Indonesia 231, Nepal 229. Among young adults, the ministry says most new TB patients weren't born in Japan. So Japan picked the six countries sending the most cases and told them: prove it before you come. No one from the U.S., Canada, Australia or Europe is asked to prove anything.
