RSI-2 pullback backtest on 16 years of E-mini S&P 500 futures, with every fill joined to the real bid-ask spread that was quoted at that exact second. 19,692 trades on 1-minute bars from August 2010 to August 2026, and the question was simple: which slice of the trading actually pays for the rest? The answer is none of them, and the reason is not the strategy. Split by hour of day, the result is flat: every hour of the session loses between $121.87 and $128.06 per trade, so the gap between your best hour and your worst hour is $6.19. That is the split anyone can do in a spreadsheet, and it tells you almost nothing. The split that matters is not in a trade log at all. We measured the actual top-of-book quote at 38,903 of the 39,384 fills from tick data. The rule has a genuine gross edge of $6.66 per trade and it is positive in all 17 calendar years. Getting in and out costs $131.27. That turns +$131,238 gross into -$2,453,552 net, an average of -$124.60 a trade. Robustness: buy and hold over the same window made $331,208. All 27 parameter settings lose, the best still down $1,430,678. Walk-forward out of sample across 59 quarterly windows delivered -$123.12 per trade, the same answer. 0 of 17 years positive. Double the costs and it is -$5,038,342. You cannot fix a $131 cost problem with a time-of-day filter. The 5.6 million minute bars and every quote behind them are included with QuantPad, no data vendor and no CSV hunting. #QuantPad #backtesting #algotrading #futurestrading #marketdata
