@the.dutch.archeologist: Urk: This Village Stayed. The Sea Disappeared Imagine growing up on an island, then watching the water beside your village become farmland. 🌊🇳🇱 That is the extraordinary transformation behind Urk, a former island in the Netherlands whose surroundings were completely reshaped by Dutch engineering. For centuries, Urk stood in the Zuiderzee. The water provided livelihoods through fishing, but it also brought danger. Protecting this small community from erosion and storms was a constant struggle. Then the landscape began to change. In 1932, the completion of the Afsluitdijk cut the Zuiderzee off from the North Sea, creating the IJsselmeer. In 1939, a dike connected Urk to the mainland at Lemmer. By 1942, the neighbouring Noordoostpolder had been drained. An expanse of water had become land. Today, the old village still rises above its surroundings. Its harbour faces the IJsselmeer, while roads, fields and neighbourhoods occupy areas that were once underwater. Urk kept its connection to fishing even as its island geography disappeared. Look at an old map beside a modern one, and you are seeing more than a changing coastline. You are seeing an entirely new landscape built around an existing community. Would you have preferred life on the island, or the opportunities that came with the new land? Rob vL GEN❌️ 🇳🇱🇵🇭🇪🇺🇨🇦 :
but they made a mistake. connecting it to mainland. the ground water left the mainland. that mistake was not made with Flevoland. that's why Flevoland land is not direct connected to mainland
