In this powerful 1994 broadcast, General Sani Abacha addressed a nation still reeling from the political earthquake of 1993, the annulled June 12 election. He spoke in calm, measured tones, but his words carried the weight of transition, and unresolved tension. “In 1992, some presidential aspirants had to be disqualified. And we all knew what happened in 1993, that election had to be cancelled… So we have taken the necessary steps to ensure that some of these incidents are avoided in the future.” He continued, not with the confidence of a man offering solutions, but with the weariness of one who had seen the system rot from the inside: “The transition programme is for the nation… but the major players are the politicians themselves. They must bury their differences. They must play politics the way it should be played , not politics of religion, not politics of ethnicity, not politics of animosity.” In this clip, his words indirectly pointed to two men whose names still echo in the corridors of Nigerian political history ,MKO Abiola, the presumed winner of the 1993 elections, and Alhaji Bashir Tofa, the NRC candidate from Kano. The canceled election was widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s history, and its abrupt annulment tore through the nation’s soul. Abacha, now firmly seated in power after taking over from Ernest Shonekan in a palace-like coup, spoke of “power rotation” an attempt, perhaps, to placate the South after the injustice of June 12. But beneath his words, Nigerians heard the warning: politics, when poisoned by personal ambition and ethnic suspicion, can destroy a nation’s destiny. He ended with a subtle call, or a veiled threat: “When politics begins to favor one person, it becomes biased. And that’s when they begin to exploit it. The politicians themselves must change their attitude.” It was a speech layered with history, silence, and shadows. 📚 Our Stories must be told 📕 Untold Chronicles is officially out in hardcopy ..
