On this week’s episode of Identity Unboxed, “Embracing Transformation in the Public Eye,” we sat down with @Fannita to discuss her rise to TikTok virality and the criticism she received following a drastic weight transformation in which she lost 165 pounds. Fannita shared her journey of losing many followers after the initial outpouring of support she received when she launched her career in content creation. She credits much of the scrutiny to intersecting forces of identity and anti-Black stereotypes that often shape racist perceptions of Black women as boisterous, aggressive, and overly confident. She has found assurance in her identity by focusing on her career goals and detaching her worth from engagement on her posts. On intersectionality, she shared: “There are so many intersectionalities and there are so many biases in the world.” Her observations of the digital landscape as a Black creator harken back to racist depictions ingrained in consumers of content, including Jim Crow-era Black minstrelsy shows, where white actors in Blackface performed caricatures of Black people, and marketing tactics that mocked Black features, cultural food preferences, and roles as “the help.” Fannita also spoke about experiencing racism in compensation compared with white counterparts. Her experience aligns with 2021 research by MSL, a global public relations agency, and The Influencer League, which found Black influencers were paid 35% less than white influencers. She discussed how body image before her weight loss compounded the scrutiny she received. As a Black woman who did not fit Eurocentric beauty standards, she found strength in authenticity and an unwillingness to conform for others’ comfort. Listen to Fannita’s story of becoming her most unapologetic self now! 🎙️
