Pittsburgh is known for bridges, steel and the Steelers, but some of its best stories are standing in plain sight. Five of them: 1. A fort building that outlived the fort. The Fort Pitt Block House was built in 1764 as part of Fort Pitt. It is considered the oldest authenticated structure west of the Allegheny Mountains. When the fort was demolished in 1792, the Block House stayed because someone was living in it. In 1894 Mary Schenley gave the deed to the Daughters of the American Revolution to preserve it. 2. A bridge older than the skyline behind it. The Smithfield Street Bridge opened in 1883, designed by Gustav Lindenthal. It replaced a wire rope suspension bridge by John Roebling, is a National Historic Landmark, and is often described as the second oldest steel bridge in the United States. 3. A hillside railway from 1870. The Monongahela Incline opened on May 28, 1870 and is the oldest continuously operating funicular in the United States. Its engineer, John Endres, was assisted by his daughter Caroline, one of the first women engineers in the country. 4. A skyscraper full of classrooms. The Cathedral of Learning stands 535 feet tall and is the tallest educational building in the Western Hemisphere. Inside are 31 Nationality Rooms, and 29 of them are used as everyday classrooms. 5. A fountain where two bridges used to meet. The tip of the Point once connected the Manchester Bridge and the Point Bridge. Both were removed in 1970, and Point State Park opened in August 1974 after its fountain was completed. A Frank Lloyd Wright civic center plan for the site was rejected.
