In Parable of the Sower, the protagonist relies on acorns for food because of climate disaster and she preserved indigenous books that taught how to use them. That’s how I learned acorns are edible.

Slavic here. We use them, mostly for oil. And we call a season of harvesting eyecorns “Gods hand is open.” Because it used to be a free food for everyone - eyecorns, muhrooms, late fruirs, pinecones etc. It helped to poor people to survive winter.

I thought of y’all when I was cracking a bunch of hickory nuts the other day! Turns out a stone mortar and pestle works way better than chasing each individual nut around with a hammer!
