I was 11 years old and I remember my older siblings excitement of this show coming on because before that all they had was American bandstand which occasionally would play a black artist they were excited because there was a lot of buzz surrounded by this show coming on... we all gathered in the living room around the big TV mom said it was okay for us to turn on the big TV back in those days you didn't turn on the console oh you didn't turn on that high-five with the record player in it no you had to ask permission to turn that on.. and reset and we watch the first episode of soul train
