Things I really wish I knew when I started swimming — especially coming from a non-swimmer background. 1️⃣ Swim often (even if it’s short) Swimming once a week and hoping for progress is rough. Technique, feel for the water, and breathing come from repetition. Short, frequent sessions beat long, rare ones every time. Even 20–30 minutes counts. Consistency matters more than heroic workouts. 2️⃣ Have a plan — just swimming back and forth won’t magically make you better Swimming lengths, thinking that time in the pool is enough? It’s usually not. Without structure, you just repeat the same habits. A simple plan with drills, rest, and intention makes a huge difference — even if the session is short. 3️⃣ You need feedback (this one is big) Swimming is hard to self-correct. What feels right is often very different from what actually happens in the water. Finding a club, a friend, or a coach — even for one short session — can fast-track your progress massively. And if that’s not an option? Film yourself or post your technique online and ask for feedback. One small correction can save you months of guessing. 4️⃣ Gear helps (it’s not mandatory, but it helps a lot) Things like paddles, pull buoy, fins — they’re tools, not shortcuts. Used correctly, they help you feel the water, build strength, and understand body position. You don’t need everything from day one, but learning why and how to use them properly makes swimming feel less chaotic and more controlled. Swimming isn’t intuitive for most adults. It’s technical, humbling, and frustrating at first — and that’s normal. Progress comes from frequency, structure, feedback, and patience. If you’re struggling, it doesn’t mean you’re bad at swimming. It just means you’re learning a skill that takes time. If you’re at the beginning: stick with it. It gets better — quietly, gradually, and then all at once. #ironman #swimming #triathlon #advice
