@conscious.app: LibreOffice, the ethical alternative to Microsoft Office, just released a version with no AI on purpose, and it got a record one million downloads in its first week. It's free software for documents, spreadsheets and presentations, made by a nonprofit. There are no subscriptions, no tracking, and your files are never sent off your computer. It even opens and saves Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, so you don't lose anything by switching. The announcement for version 26.8 said it contains no generative AI features, and called that a deliberate decision. The foundation says it isn't against AI, but none of today's AI tools meet its privacy rules, so it left them out. People responded by downloading it more than any LibreOffice release has ever been downloaded in its first week. Microsoft went the other way. In January 2025, it added its AI assistant Copilot to Microsoft 365 and raised the U.S. price of the Personal plan from $70 to $100 a year, its first price increase in 12 years. A cheaper plan without the AI did exist. But Australia's consumer regulator took Microsoft to court, alleging it hid that plan from about 2.7 million customers until they tried to cancel. Microsoft apologized, admitted it "fell short of our standards," and offered refunds.
