@ryanlpeterman: Why internet links are ordered that way ⠀ This is a clip from a longer conversation with Paul Mockapetris, the creator of DNS, about stories from the early internet. If you're interested in the full conversation you can find it on YouTube and Spotify (link in bio)
When that standard was implemented I guarantee there was no idea thought of auto - completing the URL

Good thing Java devs didn't invent DNS and HTTP.

He made a mistake and then, years later, came up with this explanation to try to save it

URLs are for humans. Computers have no problems reversing it to do a lookup.

Why would you not do it that way?

I'm not sure if autocomplete was the reason, because it wasn't basically used at all back than when DNS domains are designed

Autocomplete can work either way

Maybe it was obvious, but software development for fucking ever did it the opposite way. Prior to the existence of the Internet

Guess what, Your physical home address does the exact same thing. It makes since from an addressing perspective when you stop and remember we address names are human readable.

Funny because as a computer scientist I read it backwards and it makes sense. What file? from what directory? from what domain? from who? and which of their servers? thats how you prep a get request

the URL itself goes from least to most specific. only the domain name portion of that is flipped

Domain name. Not url. URL includes the part after /

wut :
autocomplete had to work around the URL not the other way around this is why most browsers will infer www and it's common practice to put a cnamw for it in DNS

his explanation is incorrect, yes browers have that feature now but when the system created something like that was impossible. the correct explainatiin is human readability.

Great for auto complete based on history. It’s an obvious choice.
