@northerntiernaturalist: The Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens) has a three-stage life cycle, during which it transforms from an aquatic larva into a land-dwelling juvenile known as a red eft (pictured here) before finally returning to the water as an adult. In it's eft phase, it sports a neon-orange coloration adorned with black-bordered red spots. It's skin contains a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin. These adaptable amphibians are widely distributed across the eastern United States, from the Canadian border, to Florida and extending as far west as Minnesota, eastern Texas, and the Gulf Coast region.
