On the night of 14 November 2017, tanks rolled into Harare. Soldiers took over the state broadcaster and confined 93-year-old President Robert Mugabe to his home. Before dawn, a general went on state TV to say it was "not a military takeover of government." Mugabe had led Zimbabwe since independence in 1980. He was a liberation hero who had spent a decade in prison. Over 37 years in power his rule also brought crushed opposition, violent elections, and an economic collapse that ended in hyperinflation and 100-trillion-dollar notes. By 2017 the fight was over who would replace him: his wife Grace, or his vice-president Emmerson Mnangagwa, nicknamed "the Crocodile". Mugabe fired Mnangagwa on 6 November. Mnangagwa fled the country, but the army was on his side. Eight days later the tanks rolled in. Tens of thousands marched in Harare. His party removed him as leader, and parliament began impeachment proceedings. On 21 November, part-way through the debate, the Speaker read out Mugabe's resignation letter. Mnangagwa was sworn in three days later. Mugabe died in 2019, aged 95. 🇿🇼 Liberation hero, or dictator?
