@skynews: A man has been charged after Australian MP Helen Haines was struck by a car in Wangaratta, Victoria. Haines remains in a critical condition and has undergone a leg amputation. Sky's Nicole Johnston has the latest. #SkyNews #Australia
Imagine if the suspect were Muslim or a person of colour. Would the incident immediately be labelled a major terrorist attack? Would the media and politicians react differently?
There are serious questions about double standards, racial profiling and how terrorism is defined and reported depending on the identity of the suspect.
The political rhetoric of figures such as Donald Trump and Pauline Hanson has also contributed to heated debates about immigration, race and religion. When political leaders repeatedly single out certain communities, it risks deepening divisions, fuelling prejudice and encouraging people to view entire communities with suspicion.
The same standards must apply to everyone, regardless of race, religion or political beliefs. Violence should be investigated based on the evidence, and every incident should be treated with the same seriousness. Justice must be impartial, and accountability must never depend on who the suspect is.
