@floriangadsby: What makes this process all the more enjoyable are my tungsten trimmers made by Sophisticated Pagen, although from time to time I forget one of them has a magnet inside, the idea being that it locks the tool in place on a specially made holder, to prevent them from rolling off of the workbench and smashing, but I forget and suddenly find myself flinging metal ribs around instead. They are easily the sharpest trimming tools I’ve ever worked with, together with being genuinely beautifully crafted objects in their own right. It can make them tricky to use for certain tasks but for ripping through excess clay on the bases of these bowls they’ve become my workhorses for removing mass. They tear through properly leather hard clay and I feel like a surgeon in the same exact moment. This video shows the trimming of the bowl you might have seen me throw a few days ago, (I’ll link it with this real if you’d like to see how it’s formed). There’s a lot of work in these and my approach is relatively unorthodox in terms of how the vessel is turned. The fundamental goal is to create a shape that’s both curved on the inside, whilst highly angular on the inside and it’s this that dictates how the shapes themselves are thrown, as like you can easily see, there’s a lot of excess material in these and there needs to be to achieve the peculiar profile the pots have. #pottery #oddlysatisfying #craft #carving #ceramics

I learn so much watching your videos, so just wanted to say thank you! Any tips for preventing “razor burn”/burrs when trimming the delicate edges like the rims? I can use a damp sponge and rub to smooth them out, but I’d like to avoid them happening in the first place, if possible, and it doesn’t seem like you encounter the same issues with this.

I would be delighted to have plants in one of these if it had like a dipped rim but was otherwise bare clay, that would be a fantastic home for succulent plants that need water to evaporate pretty quickly
